Of 6 amaranth varieties from Trinidad and one from Jamaica evaluated, Jamaica Native was most suitable for vegetable production due to late flowering, succulence and high fresh and dry matter production, 18,670 kg/ha and 3,449 kg/ha respectively. N at 300 kg/ha and weekly harvests starting at the 3rd week after transplanting gave optimum yields but there was no response to added P. N fertilization increased the nitrate and oxalate content of leaves and stems but not apparently to a detrimental level
