Some effects of petroleum residues on the cromarty series (Entic pelluderts)

The readily distinguished characteristics of petroleum polluted (Cromarty Series soils of south Trinidad) included blackening of the soil, presence of a characteristic odour and water repellent properties. Bulk density was reduced (lg/cu. cm.) with aggregation of the smaller sized particles and the formation of stable aggregates. Total void space could not be determined as water did not penetrate the cores. Chemical analytical methods based on the soil being in close contact with the reagents, such as pH determination, cation exchange capacity and available phosphorus (Trong) were affected by the water-repellency of the soil. Analyses using strong bases and acids or high temperatures were not affected. Oxidizable C increased seven-fold and N slightly. Yields of humic acid and fulvic acid were greater for the polluted samples, but lower as a percentage of total C. Hydrogen peroxide or sodium hydroxide did not oxidise the organic matter in petroleum polluted soils; carbon tetrachloride was the best extractant for petroleum compounds when used in a soxhlet extractor
