Three treatment options for modification of the distillery plant to decrease the high BOD (Biological oxygen demand) of distillery effluent are compared in a laboratory-scale batch process. Three dilutions of blackstrap molasses, 60 degree, 45 degree and 23 degree Brix, were clarified with sulphuric acid and precipitated solids analysed. The supernatant was fermented with yeast and residue after ethanol distillation further analysed. There was significant recovery of inorganic nutrients by removal of the solids from clarified molasses but sugar content was lost from the molasses. There was high nitrogen recovery for use in animal feed in the yeast fraction. The BOD/TOC (total organic carbon) levels were still high in all 3 processes
