Plant parasitic nematode problems associated with vegetable production in the Leeward Islands

The islands of Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis were surveyed for parasitic nematodes associated with tomato, cabbage, carrot, eggplant and pepper. Over 300 soil and root samples were taken in each island and 18 genera were identified mainly Rotylenchulus reniformis and Meloidogyne spp. as well as Pratylenchus spp. and Heliocotylenchus spp. to a lesser extent. In trials conducted in Montserrat, tomato plots treated with NEMAGON [DBCP] (dibromochloropropane) yielded 32-55 % more than the control
