Activity of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and serum T4, T3 and rT3 levels in sheep with chronic hepatic fascioliasis

Concentrations of T4, T3 and rT3 were measured in blood sera of sheep infected with chronic fascioliasis. The animals were classified into groups on the basis of clinical condition as the result of antihelminthic treatment and the egg counts. The level of infestation among groups varied but was correlated with the GGT level. The concentrations of thyroid hormones were not related either to duration or to severity of infestation. An increase in the rT3 concentration was observed but it reflected malnutrition rather than changes in T4 to T3 conversion due to hepatic failure.
