A field experiment with increasing NPK fertilizer quantities and with four spring barley varieties has been carried out in the hilly region of Kosovo (Yugoslavia) at the altitude of 720 meters above sea-level. Fertilization has been proved to have a very positive effect on the yield of all investigated spring barley varieties. The yield increased by fertilization was 94 to 158 percent, depending on the variety. Variety "Zenit" responded to fertilization best, its yield increasing almost immediately with increasing fertilizer quantities. Increased NPK fertilizer quantities had good positive effects on the plant number per square meter, plant height, ear lenght and mass of grain in an ear, but they did not affect the hectolitre weight.
