Soil erosion control for flood management in Bangladesh: a review on present situation and the improvement potentials

Research results and other information specially relating to flood management, soil erosion and sedimentation in Bangladesh and neighbouring countries were reviewed in detail. The river siltation data available in Bangladesh were found to be extremely variable which also did not refer any research background. Research results showed that deforestation in combination with damage of grass cover on hills cause severe soil erosion. Sheet erosion on floodplain areas played a vital role in increasing river sediment loads in Bangladesh. Legislative measures on soil conservation are essential for controlling soil erosion in Bangladesh as followed in other countries including United States of America.
