The influence of increasing levels of nitrogen and phosphorus on two rice varieties in saline soils [in Philippines]

To study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization under saline conditions on growth, yield and mineral composition of two rice varieties differing in tolerance to salinity, one pot experiments was conducted in the green house of IRRI. The varieties 199764-45-2-2, a salt tolerant line and IR26 a cultivar moderately susceptible to salinity were used. The Ec of the soil was adjusted to 6.8 dSm-1. Three levels of N (0, 50 and 100 mg N kg soil) and three levels of phosphorus (0, 50 and 100 mg Pkg-1 soil) were tested. The growth and yield of both salt tolerant and sensitive rices were increased with N and P fertilization. The application of N increased the plant height, tiller number and leaf area while the application of P increased the leaf area only. Applied nitrogen increased the N, P, Na, Mg Fe, Mn and Cu concentration in plants while the application P increased the Mg and Cu and decreased the Fe content in plant tissue. The application of N alone, decreased the Cu concentration in plants.
