A total of 1708 seed samples comprising of 950 of Corchorus capsularis, 473 of Corchorus olitorius, 237 of Hibiscus sabdarifa, 44 of H. cannabinus, 1 of H. radiatus and 3 of C. aestuans have been collected during 1986-88 for all over Bangladesh. A portion of the seed samples were sown for characterization at different station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Characterization of the samples were made on the basis of the following traits; pigmentation, plant height, technical height, base diameter, top diameter, canopy , number nodes, day to flower, green weight; bark weight; fibre; stick weight; top root length and weight, leaf angle, petiole length, lamina length, lamina breadth and internode length. Preliminary investigations indicate sources of genes for tolerance to drought, waterlogging and insensitivity to sowing time in C. capsularis; tolerance to waterlogging and higher bark to stick ratio in C. olitorius and shorter maturity in H. sabdariffa in addition to their variability in other morpho-agronomical characters.
