Increasing maize productivity by improving the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and potassium application [Egypt]

In sandy clay loam soil plants cv. open pollinated Giza-2 received 35 kg N/ fad. as stimulatory dose after thinning and were fertilized with 70 kg N/ fad. alongside with either 0, 52 or 78 kg k2 0 fad. The whole amount of both N and K fertilizers were added either at onset of tasseling, at grain filling stage or split at grain filling. The highest dry matter content in maize plant tissues was accumulated due to splitting the N and K fertilizers into two equal parts and applying at onset of tasseling + at grain filling under 78 kg K2 0/ fad. Blades of maize plants which were fertilized with whole amount of both N and K fertilizers as one dose at the onset of tasseling under 52 kg K2 0/ fad. contained the chorophyll a, a + b and carotenoids content at 75 days after sowing. The same time of N and K application under 78kg K2 0/ fad. was the best for increasing chlorophyll b content. At 90 days from sowing, double dressing of N and K fertilizers under 78 kg K2 0/ fad. was superior for increasing both chlorophyll a as well as total chlorophyll, whereas chlorophyll b increased due to applying N and K fertilizers at grain filling stage under zero K2 0 level and carotenoids under 52 kg K2 o/ fad. at the same time of application. When maize plants were fertilized with N and K fertilizers as a double dress at onset of tasseling + at grain filling under 78 kg K2 0/ fad., the highest grain and straw yields as well as 100 grains weight were obtained.
