Relative efficiency of different designs for irrigation and nitrogen fertilization of field trials in maize [Egypt]

This study planned to estimate the relative efficiency (RE) of Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), Split Plot Design (SPD) and Split Block Design (SBS) for irrigation and N-fertilization experiments in maize (Bouble cross 202) in 1983 and 1984 seasons. Three irrigation intervals (10, 16 and 22 days) and three N-rates (60, 90 and 120 kg N/fed.) were studied. Data also, indicated that, the split block design SBD had the highest efficiency in determining the effect of irrigation intervals, nitrogen fertilization levels and their interaction for the studied traits of maize relatively to the other two experimental designs, RCBD and SPD. Results indicated that increasing irrigation intervals significantly decreased days to 50 % silking by not more than one day while it significantly increased protein % in grains. Grain yield was increased by increasing intervals from 10 to 16 days. Increasing N-rate from 60 to 90 or 120 kg N/fed. increased significantly days to 50 % silking, grain yield and protein content.
