Specific gravity and fiber length in second-growth Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh

Specific gravity of wood at breast height and fiber length were studied in second-growth River-red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh) plantation grown in Egypt. Wood samples from (a) 4-year and (b) 10-year old second-growth were used in this study. Data from mature wood with heartwood from 18-year old plantation (c) were used for comparison. Mean specific gravity for (a) was 0.52+0.044, (b) 0.74+0.039, while it was 0.55+0.053 for (c). Highly significant differences between (a) and (b), and between (b) and (c) were observed, while no significant differences were detected between (a) and (c). Fiber length increased with age. Average values were 0.86+0.124 mm, 0.92+0.130 mm and 1.15+0.142 mm for (a), (b) and (c) respectively. There were significant differences in fiber between (a) and (c). However, no sigificant differences in fiber length were detected between (a) and (b) and similarly, between (b) and (c).
