Plant density affecting the growth, yield, oil components and pigments content of Ocimum basilicum plants [Egypt]

This work was conducted at the Experimental Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, during the seasons of 1981 and 1982 on sweet basil plants, Ocimum basilicum L. The seedlings were transplanted in 25-cm pots as the following one, two and three plants per pot in every treatment. The results obtained from this investigation could be summarized as follows: The plants spaced at closer distances (3-plant/ pot) were lower of number of branches/ plant than wider distance. Planting at wide spacing treatment encouraged both fresh and dry weights of herb. On the other hand, plants grown at narrow spacing decreased it per plant. The close spacing had a higher oil percentage and oil yield than wide spacing. Three of two plants per pot treatments increased linalool percentage, whereas methyl chavicol percentage decreased in sweet basil oil. Planting at narrow spacing treatments decreased all pigments, chlorophyll A, B and carotenoids content in leaves of sweet basil plants.
