Effect of rhizobia inoculation and levels on growth and yield of pea plants [Egypt]

Pea (Pisum sativum cv. Little Marvel) seeds inoculated with or without Rhizobia were sown in field during the two successive seasones of 1986/1987 and 1987/1988. Later, pea plants received the different levels of NPK, i.e. 0, 30, 45 and 60 kg/ feddan. The results indicated that vegetative growth in terms of plant height, fresh and dry weight/ plant was not affected by inoculation with Rhizobia, though No. of leaves/ plant was significantly increased. Rhizobia inoculation resulted in increasing the total yield by 13.8% above control. In addition, Chl. a, total chlorophyll (a and b) and 5-aminolevulinic acid production were increased in the case of inoculation; N and P% of pea leaves was augmented alike. The level of NPK, namely 30 kg/ fed. gave more pods yield. Rhizobia x 30 kg NPK interaction was the most effective in this study, since total pods yield increased by 71.3 and 38.8% above non-inoculated and inoculated without NPK supply, respectively. Likewise Rhizobia x 3 kg NPK interaction gave pea plants with more N and P content Therefore, inoculation of pea seeds with Rhizobia supplemented with 30 pa NPK/ fed. could be recommended for high pea productivity.
