Growth response of some wheat cultivars to irrigation with saline drainage water lost in Suez Canal [Egypt]

In clay-loam soil three cultivars of wheat plants triticum vulgare cv. Giza 157, Sakha 61 and Sakha 69 were fertilized with N and P and irrigated with good quality of water (G.Q.W.) with EC 0.5 mmhos/cm, or mixed water from 1/3 drainage water (D.W.) and 2/3 G.Q.W. with EC 4.7 mmhos/cm or 2/3 D.W. and 1/3 G.Q.W. with EC 9 mmhos/cm or with completly drainage water with E.C. 12.8 mmhos/cm. Increasing the percentage of drainage water in water irrigation decreased plant height, leaves number as well as dry matter accumulation of wheat, plants at ear emergence and grain and straw yield at harvest time. The highest grain yield was obtained with wheat cultivar Sakha 69 under all levels of drainage water. Protein content in grains was enhanced by increasing the level of drainage water in irrigation decreased plant height, leaves number as well as dry matter accumulation of wheat plants at ear emergence and grain and straw yield at harvest time.
