Effect of salinity on structural and physical fiber properties [Egypt]

At present, it is estimated that about two million feddan are salt affected to different degrees. Most of these area located in northern part of the Delta, new lands at Noubaria and Fayoum. A pot experiment was performed in 1982 season to study the effect of irrigation salinty on fiber properties and fiber structural properties using the Egyptian cotton cultivar Giza 75, experiment design was randomized complete blocks with five replicates the treatment were irrigation with water containing 0, 2000, 3000 and 4000 ppm (parts per million) of sodium or calcium chlorides were used either or plus soil and ication of potassium sulphate. Fiber length, fiber weight per 1 cm and standard fiber weight did not follow a definite trend or appeared to be little affected by increasing salinity up to 4000 ppm. Fiber strength was reduced by increasing salinity. Fiber elongation % was increased with 17.11% compared with control plants at 3000 ppm calcium chloride. Maturity ratio tended to increase as application rates of sodium chloride only increased up to 4000 ppm.
