Effect of sulphate salinity and Alar (B-9) on some growth characters and chemical composition of Cicer arietinum plants

A pot experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of NRC. Dokki, Cairo, Egypt in the winter season 1982-1983 to investigate the effect of two levels of salinity (tap water and 4000 ppm sulphate salinity used by Strogonov, (1962), and three levels of Alar (0,1000 and 2000 ppm spraying) on growth and chemical composition (levels of photosynthetic pigments and free amino acids) of Cicer arietinum plants. The result showed that : I. Plant height was slightly decreased by salinity. 2. The chlorophyll (especially chl. a) was increased by 4000 ppm sulphate salinity. 3. Exposure to salinity affected the relative content of the free amino acids studied. The amounts of these amino acids at any salinity level tended, with certain exceptions, to be increased in response to growth substances treatments, though not all results were significant. 4. Plants sprayed with B-9 were shorter and had lower dry weight but were higher in levels of photosynthetic pigments and amino acids. The highest effect was obtained with 1000 ppm dose and the 30 day application.
