Effect of sowing pattern and chlormequat on growth and yield of winter barley

Two Experiments were carried out at the Agric. Res. Farm at Tillycorthe and in the glass house at the school of Agric. Aberdeen Univ. in 1982/83 season at Aberdeen, U.K. The main objective of this work was to investigate plant population (250, 350, 450 or 550 plants/m), planting patterns (rows or underground broadcast) and growth regulator (chlormequat) effects on the growth and yield of winter barley Iqri cv. The data showed that mortality of seedlings was greatest on high density plots. The range of established plant number was similar on plots sown with 237, 303, or 373 kg ha of seeds, (350, 450 or 550 plants/m2), but plots sown with 170 kg/ ha (250 plants/ m2) had the lower plant population at this time. Tiller population were generally higher on underground broadcast plots.
