Two field experiments were carried out at Noubaria Agricultural Research Station during 1981 and 1982 to study the effects of three rates of phosphorous fertilizer, i.e..O, 15 and 30 kg P2O5/Fad. and three rates of nitrogen, i.e., O, 30 and 60 kg/ Fad. on head diameter, 100-seed weight, seed yield per plant, seed yield/ fad., oil content and oil yield of Giza 1, Mayak and Sorem 80 sunflower varieties. The main results were: 1. Varieties differed significantly in all characters studied -Giza 1 had largest heads, heaviest seed weight, high seed yield/ plant and seed yield. Sorem 80 and Mayak produced higher oil content and oil yield. 2. P- fertilizer significantly increased head diameter, seed yield, oil content and oil yield. The differences between applied 15 or 30 kg P205/Fad. was not significant. 100 seed weight, and seed yield/ plant, were significantly influenced by P- fertilizer. 3- N-fertilizer increased head diameter, 100 seed weight, seed yield/ plant and seed and oil yield/ Fad., while it reduced oil content. 4. Varieties X phosphorous interaction was not significant for all characters studied, while varieties X nitrogen interaction was significant for seed yield in both seasons but significant only in 1982 for head diameter, seed yield/ plant and oil yield.
