Cotton response to mepiquat in the Republic of Burundi
1988
Makram, E. (Ministry of Agriculture, Cairo (Egypt). Cotton Research Inst.)
Two field experiments were carried out at the North-Imbo Project, Province Cibitoke, Burundi, throught 1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons, to study the effect of mepiquat chloride on growth, yield and some fiber properties of the cotton cultivar Pan 575 (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The results obtained reveal that DMPC reduced final plant height without affecting number of sympodia per plant. The doses of 50-100 g.a.i./ha increased number of open bolls per plant, yield per plant and yield per hectare. Boll weight, lint percentage and seed index were slightly affected by DMPC treatments. Fiber length was increased in favour of DMPC treating plants, while fiber strength decreased slightly. High dose of 150 g.a.i./ha decreased sharply fiber maturity and percentage of mature fibers in 1984, while in 1985 both characters were fluctuating from one treatment to another.
