Response of rice cultivar IR 50 to nitrogen and zinc sulphate application [Egypt]

Two field experiments were carried out at the Experimental Farm of Agric., Mansoura Univ., in 1985 and 1986 seasons to study the effect of four nitrogen levels (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg N/fad) and four times of zinc sulphate application (at transplanting, 10, 20 and 30 days after transplanting). The experiments were laid out in strip plot design with four replications. The main results could be summarized as follows: Addition of 75 kg N/fad increased plant height, flag blade area, number of panicles/m2, 100-grain weight, panicle length number of grains/ panicle, panicle weight, grain and straw yields and grain protein content in both seasons. In both seasons, application of zinc sulphate after 20 days from transplanting markedly increased plant height, flag blade area number of panicles/m2, 100-grain weight, panicle length, panicle weight, grain and straw yields and grain protein content over the other treatments. Number of grains/panicle in both seasons and 100-grain weight in 1985 season were significantly influenced by the interaction.
