Comparison of two types of testers for the evaluation of inbred lines of corn [Egypt]

A total of 49 salines out of the composite-108 were evaluated for grain yield in two ways. These were (1) in top crosses to a broad gene base tester, and (2) in topcrosses to a narrow gene base tester. The mean squales due to tester was highly significant indicating greater diversity among the two testers. The estimates of the variance of g.c.a. indicated that the additive genetic variance was the more important component in the inheritance of grain yield/plant character. The best general combiners over the two testers were C.L. l, C.L. 4, C.L. 7.C.L. 9, C.L. 23, C.L. 25, C.L. 35, C.L. 40 and C.L. 41. The lines C.L. C.L. 1, C.L. 4, C.L. 10, C,L. 18, C.L. 21, C,L, 32, C.L. 28,C.L. 31, C.L. 42, C.L. 44 and C.L. 45 gave highly significant positive s.c.a. effects with the narrow gene base tester, while the lines C.L. 8, C.L. 9. C.L. 16, C.L. 17, C.L. 27, C.L. 40, C.L. 49 gave highly significant positive s.c.a. effects with the varietal cross tester A.E. X V. 7421. The lines C.L. 1, C.L. 4, C.L. 9, C.L. 23, C.L. 40 and C.L. 44 gave highly significant positive g.c.a. and s.c.a. effects and the crosses C.L. 7xT2, C.L. 3 x T2, C.L. 16 x T2, C.L. 35 x T2, C.L. 40 x T2, C.L. 41 X T2, and C.L. 44 x T2 exceeded the yield of the constant parent by more than 20 percent, indicating that these materials would be efficient and propective in improving grain yield of maize.
