Surgical approach for the correction of knuckling a mule with the aid of carbon fiber implantation (case report) [Egypt]

A case of knuckling in a 15 years old mule was treated surgicaly by means of carbon fibre implantation after lengthening through Z-shape tenotomy which offers good results. Clinically the animal was resting its right forelimb on the toe with heel and flexion of the fetlock joint. X-ray indicates the contraction of the deep flexor tendon where the os pedis was slightly rotated ventrally. This contraction results in the knuckling of the animal. Four months post-operation the animal could bear its body weight completely with normal attitude on standing position. Lameness was still present but in a light degree which increased on exaggeration of work and exercise. At the same time there was a slight diffuse thickening at the level of the flexor tendons. Carbon fibre implantation gave good results in this type of operations.
