This work was carried out to study the changes in cane quality during processing and their effect on the overall recovery. The results obtained could be summarized as follows: -Out of the total cane quantity delivered to Kom-ombo sugar factory, 47% had an average ash/ juice and reducing sugar/ ash ratio of 0.827 and 0.71 respectively, whereas 53% had the average of 0.608 for ash/ juice ratio and 1.41 for reducing sugar/ ash ratio. This indicates the bad effect of soil type in Kom-ombo region on the quality of cane delivered to the factory. At the present reducing sugar/ ash ratio of 1.043, sugar production from one million tons cane is expected to increase by 3747 tons, if the present molasses purity is decreased from 39 to 33 and the mixed juice purity maintained at 83. This means an average overall recovery of 83.0 instead of the present average of 80.18. The non-pol % brix, and ash % brix increased from primary juice to syrup by 3.1, 1.06 and 1.59 respectively indicating loss in juice quality during processing. On the other hand, reducing sugars/ ash ratio as the factor controlling sugar losses in final molasses had kept more or less constant with slight increase in final molasses. - No significant relation between mon-pol ratio and boiling house recovery was found.
