Production and marketing of food crops in Ghana - a case study of the Amansie district in Ashanti region
1987
Amoah, A.A.
Production and marketing of food crops in the Amansie district of the Ashanti region (Ghana) are analysed. Farmers obtained credit from friends, families and money lenders and only 9 % received bank credit and 55 % used their own equity capital. Returns to capital for the production of cassava, cocoyam and plantain were 1.68, 1.51 and 1.92 respectively, cassava being most cultivated. Using the Cobb-Douglas model, 71.2 % of variation in the value of yield was for land, labour and capital. Production elasticity was 0.944 indicating that farm operations are in decreasing returns and marginal returns to variable input zones. Wholesalers received a higher margin of produce (70 %) than retailers
