Studies on the vector relationships of whitefly transmitted golden mosaic disease of cowpea (Vigna) and Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus)

Anno-Nyako, F.O.
Virus-vector studies on a whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) - borne isolate of cowpea golden mosaic virus CGMV and Lima bean golden mosaic (LBGM) is reported. The isolates were maintained in susceptible cowpea and Lima bean, in insect-proof rearing cages in a glasshouse. A 3-hr pre-acquisition starvation of virus-free Bemisia tabaci was sufficient for optimum acquisition and transmission of both disease agents. Females of the whitefly were more efficient transmitters. Acquisition and inoculation of the virus were unaffected by variation in environmental condition but the inoculation threshold required for transmission was 2 minutes, the minimum latent periods of CGMV and LBGM being 8 hr and 6 hr respectively. Infectivity of both CGMV and LBGM was 21 days and 9 days respectively by a single adult female B. tabaci after 24 hrs acquisition access period (AAP)
