Rate of development, growth and quality of fruits of three varieties of watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris)

The growth, development and fruit quality of three cultivars of watermelon, Sugar Baby, Hybrid and Smookle, were studied. Sugar Baby developed rapidly from the 5th - 11th day after anthesis but declined steadily up to the 27th day and ceased. Smookle and Hybrid maintained steady growth from 5th to 16th, and 5th to 20th days respectively. Sugar Baby matured earliest. Differences were observed in total soluble solids, pH, vitamin C and juice content of the cultivars. Sugar Baby with its rosy pink-red flesh was more tasty and attractive
