In spite of other domestic animal species, only a few reports can be found on the endoscopic examination of swine in the international and Hungarian literature. The authors have demonstrated in the present paper that laparoscopy can also be performed in female swine and may provide the specialists with valuable data who deal with reproductive biological research or, as practicing animal breeders, fight against reproductive disorders on the farms. The operation was performed in 146 swine. Advantantages of laparoscopy in sows and gilts have been compared to those of laparotomy: the intervention takes only 20 min, the abdominal cavity has no contact with the external world, the whole abdominal cavity is accessible, the risk of surgical shock is lower, it is not necessary to make multiple suturation.
