Role of ecological factors and genotype in the variability of N, P, K content in flue-cured tobacco leaves

Variability of N, P, K content in leaves of five flue-cured tobacco varieties (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was studied. The variability of N, P, K content in cured tobacco leaves was influenced primarily by ecological (soil and climatic) factors as shown by analysis of variance over two years (1982-1983). The effect of genotype is significant for only one variety in case of P and is negligible for all varieties in case of N and K. Practically the genotypic effect can also be neglected in case of P, taking into account the poor absolute quantity resulting from the very low concentration of this element in the leaf. According to the results of factorial analysis over four years N content of the leaf was mostly influenced by the texture of soil, organic matter content and rainfall. N content was positively related to the clay and o. m. content of the soil and negatively related to rainfall. K content of the leaf was positively associated with AL-K2O content of the soil, with rainfall and was negatively associated with the clay content. A high sensitivity of tobacco plant to environmental effects has been indicated by the fact that on soils of similar main characteristics, significant correlations exist between the N and K content of leaves on one hand, and ecological factors on the other. The lack of differences in N, P, K content among cultivars makes it possible to consider the specific N, P, K demand as common for Hungarian flue-cured type tobaccos.
