Use of cellulase-enzyme "Phylacell" in the nutrition of rabbits

The digestive system of the rabbit does not produce any enzymes that are suitable for breaking down the cellulose. Digestion of crude fibre is not negligible after all, for the bacterial fermentation is the caecum makes fibre utilizable. In case of early weaning the activity of the caecum of the young rabbits is not yet perfect, so the fibre digestion is defective. In the experiments authors dosed the cellulase enzyme preparation called "Phylacell", with 20-Cx unit/mg activity into the feed of early weaned young rabbits. 2.3 or 3.1 g of the enzyme preparation was added to 1 kg feed according to the fibre content - 1.5 per cent and 2 per cent respectively - of the feed. A higher enzyme dosage - especially two weeks after weaning e.g. in the age of 4 to 6 weeks - favourably influenced the digestion of crude fibre and crude protein of the feed. It improved the weight gain of the rabbits by 9 per cent and their specific feed consumption by 7 per cent. Because of the cellulose break-down in the caecum the advantageous effect of "Phylacell" is later moderate.
