Replenishment and depletion of soil moisture in the northern rainfed areas of East Jordan. II-Soil Series 31

A two-year study was carried out in six farms whose soils represent soil series 31, in Al Sarih-Irbid. The objectives of the study were to determine the exact amount of water stored in the root zone due to precipitation, and to determine the depletion occurring in that zone due to evapotranspiration by wheat as well as the effects of fallow on moisture conservation. It was also intended to study the effects of slope classes on moisture retention and depletion. Lands of slop0-3% when left fallow during the first season (1979/80) stored only 168 mm moisture from rainfall (23% of total rainfall) of which 182 mm evaporated from the soil surface and use by weed grown on the soil. The extra 14 mm came from layers below root zone. The land planted to wheat lost 131-169 mm as evapotranspiration. In the second season fallow land stored 97-121 mm moisture from rainfall (22-28% of total rainfall) of which 54-89 mm moisture evaporated and was lost by consumption of weeds. Only 21-43 mm moisture were stored at the end of second season. Lands of slope 3-8% stored 158-163 mm moisture (22% of total rainfall). Wheat consumed about 148-169 mm moisture
