Mass selection for bolting resistance in the "Balady" cultivar of cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. Capita L.) under high temperature conditions

Two cycles of mass selection for bolting resistance in the "Balady" cultivar of cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata L., 2n=18) were carried out during 1984-1986 seasons. The two cycles of mass selection and the base population were evaluated in the late planting (high temperature conditions) in Upper Egypt (Assiut) during 1986-1988 seasons. In the first cycle (C1) of mass selection, bolting was decreased by 9.92 % relative to the base population. In the second cycle (C2) of mass selection a significant reduction (19.77 %) in the number of plants bolted was found. Date revealed a significant linear regression for bolting resistance through successive generations of mass selection. Similar trend was found for the non-marketable heads (bolters, non-head forming, etc.). Net head weight was slightly decreased by 5.87 and 6.59 % in the C1 and C2 of mass selection, respectively. It might be concluded that a significant response to mass selection after C2 to improve bolting resistance in this cultivar of cabbage could be obtained
