Physical properties of tomato fruits of nine tomato hybrids and three cultivars under plastic house conditions in the Jordan Valley

9 tomato hybrids and 3 tomato cultivars were evaluated under plastic house conditions for physical properties including fruit colour, shape, specific gravity and firmness. Majority of hybrids and cultivars were similar in fruit colour and shape, but "UC 105.7" fruits were highest in lycopene contents. Significantly highest specific gravity was recorded in fruits of the "Hy crop F1 hyb. 18110 b" which was similar to that of several other hybrids and cultivars including "Hv yield F1 hyb. 18109b". Fruit firmness was highest in fruits of the "UC 105.7" cultivar. In general fruit firmness was not substantially affected by fruit weight. Number of locules/fruit varied among hybrids and cultivars, but no beneficial effects on fruit weight or volume, were observed. However, number of seeds/fruit was highly and negatively correlated with number of locules/fruit in "Master no.2hyb", "Mox 3059hyb.", and "UC 105.7" cultivar. Number of seeds/fruit varied also but did not materially affect the final size of fruits in the tested hybrids and cultivars. Fruit weight and volume were positively correlated with number of seeds in two hybrids only, "Master no.2" and "Hope no.1"
