Distribution of the parent rocks in limestone areas of Mungyeong, Gyeongbug, and characteristics of residual soils development on that limestone were studied. The limestone of Mungyeong area was classified into white, light grey and dark grey by the colour, and light grey limestone covers 9,013 hectares on hilly, 1,577 ha of white on rolling and 818 ha of dark grey one on mountainous area with escarpments. The higher in whitish colour, the better development of Karst phenomenon. The contents of CaO in limestone by colour were about 55.41 % in white limestone, about 42.12 % in light grey limestone and about 19.60 % in dark grey limestone. Thus in strictly speaking, dark grey limestone could not be classified into limestone. The dominant soil developed in white limestone area was Pyeongchang, Gwarim in light grey and Jangseong in dark grey. The higher the whitish colour, the higher the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 was. The relationships between CaO and SiO2, or sesquoxides contents in the limestone was shown to the negative correlation. The dominant soils in the areas were characterized by having fine loamy to fine clayey textural families. The average contents of Ca and Mg was 7.31 me/100g and 2.52 me/100g of soils, that were higher than that of mean value of the other upland soils. In Gwarim series, about 20 % of gravels throughout profile and high porosity had exceptionally low in soil pH that ranged around pH 5.1-5.8. Pyeongchang series, fine clayey was classified into Typic Hapludalfs; the Gwarim, Typic Dystrochrepts and Jangseong shallow in soil depth was into Lithic Udorthents. The Pyeongchang and Gwarim soils were recommended to upland or perennial crops due to slopes, and the Jangseong soils was recommended to forest or recreation place with wildlife
