Inheritance of quantitative characters related to leaf yield in perilla (Perilla frutescens britton)., I; heterosis and combining ability

These studies were conducted to obtain basic informations on breeding for high leaf yield of perilla. A half diallel set of six parents were grown in a randomized complete block design with two replications. The percent of heterosis and combining ability of quantitative characters related to leaf yield were estimated. The analysis of variance revealed that differences among parents and F1 hybrids were highly significant in days to flower, plant height, leaf size, number of leaves per plant, stem diameter, and number of internodes on the mainstem. The variance of parents vs. F1 hybrids were highly significant in all characters except for number of internodes on the mainstem. The average heterosis for plant height, number of leaves per plant, dry weight of leaves per plant and stem diameter showed significantly positive effects. General combining abilities (GCA) were highly significant for all characters and specific combining abilities (SCA) were also for all characters except for stem diameter. Non-additive genetic variance predominated for leaf size and additive genetic variance predominated for other characters. Cultivars, Jungang, Kyongsan (a) and Kyongsan (b) had high positive GCA effect for characters related to leaf yield
