Influence of temperature on the development, fecundity and longevity of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L.

Diamondback month, Plutella xylostella L. Yponomeutitae, Lep., was observed to find out life cycle and threshold temperature for development. Egg period was 4.1, 3.0 and 3.0; larval period was 18, 8.5 and 6.1; pupal period was 6.7, 4.7 and 3.5; and the period from egg to adult was 29, 16 and 12 days, at 20deg C, 25deg C and 30deg C, respectively. Survival rate from egg to adult was 56 %, 72 %, and 13 % at 20deg C, 25deg C and 30deg C, respectively. Adult longevity showed no difference with 12 days at 20deg C and 25deg C but significantly short with 7.5 days at 30deg C. Total number of eggs produced per female were 230, 270 and 130 at 20deg C, 25deg C and 30deg C, respectively. Head width was 0.158, 0.246, 0.374 and 0.571 mm at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larva, respectively. Sex ratio (female: male) was 55:45. The threshold temperature for the development from the 1st instar larva to adult emergence was 13.8deg C and for embryonic development was 7.5deg C. The effective thermal totals from egg to adult emergence was 208 day-degree deg C
