Influence of water temperature and depths on the occurrence of the sterile-type cold damage and growth in rice plants (Oryza sativa L.)

In order to investigate the occurrence of sterile-type cold damage, the mechanisms of sterility and growth characteristics caused by water temperature during spikelet differentiation stage [SDS] and young microspore stage [YMS] in rice plants, phytotron experiments were carried out with three rice varieties having different cold tolerance. The number of young microspore per anther were numerous with high water temperature from SDS to just before YMS in cold tolerant variety. To obtain more than 90% high fertility, the threshold value for anther length should be from 1.85 to 2.00 mm and number of ripened pollen grains per anther from 650 to 800. The number of pollen grains of stigma reduced according to decreasing number of ripened pollen grains per anther. The number of remaining pollen grains in anther after anthesis increased with low water temperature from SDS to just before YMS and YMS, most of them were unripened pollen grains. The stigma length was not significantly affected by the different water temperatures from SDS to just before YMS and YMS. The YMS threshold temp. to decrease fertility was 15deg C in YUKIHIKARI cold tolerant variety and 17deg C for SIMAHIKARI sensitive variety, but these threshold temperature changed from SDS to just before YMS. Heading date was delayed from one to three days with different YMS temperature. The internode length of third and fourth related to lodging were longest on 21deg C than others, but were short in control and high water temperature from SDS to just before YMS
