Studies on the cultivation of year-round cut-flower in gerbera, 1; Variety characteristics and yield trial

The present study was carried out to observe the possibilty of continuous production of cut Gerbera with good quality. Rooted plants of Gerbera (Gerbera hybrida) cultivars, Clementine, Terramint and Terracalypso were planted in greenhouse on December 8, 1986. Their blooming characteristics were investigated during the two years. Days to first flowering after planting were required about 9 to 14 weeks and first flowering peak was observed about 7 to 8 months after planting. To produce the flowers at the end of the year, therefore, the transplanting needed to be done by August at least. Flower stem length tended to lengthen at the high temperature season and shorten at the low temperature. Stem diameter was gradually thin according to the cultivation period long. The average production rate of first grade flowers was 83.1 % during the first year and 63.7 % during the second year. Clementine had the highest rate among the three cultivars during 2 years. Total amount of year-round yields was rather higher in second year than that of first year, but the total amount of year-round first grade yields was on the contrary. Vase longevity of cut flowers varied with cultivars and seasons, those of Clementine and Terracalypso were higher, and that in summer season with high temperature was the lowest
