Studies on the performance test of the breeding pigs, 1; a comparison of finishing pigs slaughtered at different weights

This study was carried out in order to test the fattening performance and the change of body composition of pigs by slaughter weights. Sixty heads of three-way crossbred pigs were used for this purpose. Pigs were slaughtered at live weight of 90, 100 and 110Kg, respectively. In order to improve the feed requirement and backfat thickness in fattening pigs reared to 110Kg, the fattening performance of breeding pigs must be improved. As the slaughter weight increased, the carcass lengths increased in both sexes. In th viewpoint of anatomy this shows the possibility of more attachment of muscles. The percentages of dressing and lean cut increased at 110Kg slaughter weight and the proportion of ham significantly increased than any other valuable parts. But the quality of carcass was relatively lower than that of the developed countries. Therefore, it is desirable to select breeding pigs more intensively based on carcass quality. Gross income per head was highest at 110Kg slaughter weight. But considering the turnover rate 90Kg slaughter weight is acceptable under the present pork pricing system. In order to increase pork export, the present system of grading and pricing should be reorganized. Considering above-mentioned findings the present performance test of breeding pigs at 90Kg should be changed to 110Kg as soon as possible
