[Response of the maize cultivars to five production factors under deficient rainfall]

Yield data from a corn experiment grown during three years (1983 to 1985) in Hueypoxtla, Mexico, were used to establish the approximate relationship between the annual yield variations and chemical and organic fertilization, row spacing, plant density and variety. In addition, the effect of manure applications on soil moisture content, run-off and soil loss was determined. Results indicate that the application of 10 tons of manure per hectare reduces soil loss by as much as 35.9 percent, besides increasing stover yields by 27.1 percent and grain yields by 32.3 percent, when the local corn variety was grown at a density of 40,000 plants per hectare in a year with favorable rainfall. Row width behavior is variable depending on the amount and distribution of the rainfall: under high rainfall (630 mm) the best row width is 0.8 m, when rainfall is low (381 mm), the best row width is 1.2 m.
