Harvesting of marine molluscs

Harvesting of marine molluscs is within the intertial zone for clams, mussels, oysters (class Pelecypoda) and snails (class Gastropoda) using simple hand implement such as rakes and shovels. Production of oysters and mussels increased through mariculture. The more mobile molluscs were the octopus, cuttlefish and squids (class Cephalopoda). The spear gun was used for harvesting octopus while jiggers were used for cuttlefish and squids in the municipal fisheries. Commercial harvesting of squids was by using the bottom trawl and the bagnet. There was little interest in the development of fishing gear for harvesting marine molluscs. Because of the unregulated use of effective fishing gear in the country, further development of existing fishing gear might only lead to the destruction of the marine mollusc resources
