Influence of timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on the yield and agronomic traits of different lowland rice cultivars [Philippines]

The yield response of the different rice cultivars were different from each other. IR36 gave significantly higher yield in T4 while in IR62 and IR56 it was in T5. Nitrogen application in split dose, 1/2 at planting plus 1/2 10 days before or at panicle initiation gave the highest grain yield in IR36 and IR62. Low yield of IR56 was due to the infection of rice blast, brown spots and neck rot. It was noticed that IR36 and IR62 were more resistant to these diseases compared to IR56. The timing of nitrogen fertilizer application did not affect the plant height, number of days to heading, flowering, maturity and number of tillers per hill, productive tillers per hill, panicle length, number of filled grains per panicle, weight of 100 grains and the dry matter yield per plant. Application of the whole amount of nitrogen at planting reduced the percentage of filled grains per panicle significantly. The nitrogen concentration in the flagleaf at booting stage was higher than the nitrogen content of the grains. The nitrogen concentration of IR56 was observed to be higher than IR36 and IR62 at booting stage. However, the nitrogen content in the grains was reversed at harvest, IR36 and IR62 was higher compared to IR56. The timing of nitrogen fertilizer application had no significant effect to the nitrogen content of the grains. Nitrogen content of the grains showed negative relationship between grain yield.
