Profitable cropping patterns for irrigated and rainfed lowland rice environments [Philippines]

Thirty-one irrigated lowland rice-based cropping patterns were compared in 1984-86 for yield performance and profitability. For 1984, IR58-IR58-Marikit yielded highest at 8.5 t/ha rice and 4.6 t/ha tomato. Its gross margin P31,931/ha was 2.4 times higher than gross margin of check pattern IR36-IR36-IR42. For 1986, IR64-IR64-IR 32307-107-3-2-2 yielded highest at 12.2 t/ha with a gross return of P37,727/ha. Its cash investment was 29% less than that of the check in 1984. Stringbean-IR65 had a P112,218/ha gross return and P65,231/ha gross margin. Polebean production employed 996 man-days/ha, while IR65 used an additional 125 mandays/ha. Yield was 2.2 t/ha for soybean after rice, and 16.0 t/ha for potato after rice. Potato-Rice-Rice was the most promising pattern tested in irrigated lowland rice environment. IR64-Ratoon IR64-Mungbean was the most practical pattern tested in rainfed lowland rice environment. Ratoon IR64 without fertilizer yielded 0.9 t/ha after 45 days.
