Population studies on eriophyid mites associated with mango trees in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India

Two species of eriophyid mites are found associated with mango trees in India: the mango bud mite, Eriophes mangiferae (Sayed); and the silver blotch mite, Cisaberoptus kenyae Keifer. There are three types of symptoms recorded that can be attributed to these mites in this study: a bushy appearance of seedlings, vegetative distortion, and the distortion or dieback of blossoms. This mite has been found to be present during the whole year on the mango tree but two peaks of population were observed during November-December and May-June. The population decreased during rainy season (Jul-August). Cisaberoptus kenyae was first described by Keifer on mango from Kenya. In the present study this mite has been recorded for the first time from the northern part of India. The mites migrate on the tree during summer, and start feeding on and along the midrib and then on the blade near the veins, generally on the upper surface. The feeding severely injures the epidermis tissue, which turns necrotic brown. The injured tissue secretes a milky substance, which hardens into white, crusty membranous film covering different places infested by mites and giving the upper surface of leaf, at sites of mite infestation, a silvery grey blotch. Population study of this mite revealed the existence of one peak during August-December. The population was minimum during March-April.
