Evaluation of different metering devices for multi-crop seeding
1988
Than Shein
The inclined plate metering is the most suitable device for multi-crop seeding. It could meter sorghum, wheat, mungbean, soybean, cowpea and corn with the accuracy of 96 to 99 percent without seed damage. Peanut could be metered with high accuracy but seed damage of about 9 percent occurred. Horizontal plate metering ranked second for multi-crop seeding. It could meter sorghum, wheat, mungbean, soybean, cowpea, corn and peanut with accuracy of 95 to 99 percent but seed damage particularly for peanut, sorghum and soybean were very high. Foam pad metering device ranked third for multi-crop seeding. It could meter sorghum, wheat, mungbean and soybean with accuracy of 96 to 98 percent without seed damage. Perforated drum metering device could be used for closed grown crops such as sorghum, wheat and mungbean. The metering accuracy was 90 to 95 percent if the seed level could be maintained within the allowable limits. No seed damage occurred by using perforated drum metering device. Foam roller metering device is not recommended for use in multi-crop seeding since the metering accuracy was very low and seed distribution was not uniform. The optimum design parameters of each metering device were determined and further improvement for suitability to multi-crop seeding were also recommended
