Potential of rice herbage as animal feed [Philippines]

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) herbage can be an important forage in areas where rice is the only crop available during the monsoon and crop production is long. Field experiments at IRRI showed that herbage yields ranged from 0.5 to 3.2 t/ha dry weight in B4259-148-1-3-1-3, a 160-day breeding line. Crude protein yield increased with time despite declining nitrogen content owing to the increasing volume of biomass. Acceptable grain yields were obtained with early pruning regardless of cutting height. Field trials in Thailand showed appreciable herbage production with no grain yield loss. Herbage harvesting increased the economically useful fraction of the rice crop. High dry matter intake and crude protein digestibility in trials with mature goats (Capra hicus L.) demonstrated the suitability of rice herbage either as hay or as silage.
