Potassium effects on root growth and yield of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) under drought and compacted soil conditions

A line source sprinkler system (LSS) experiment was conducted in IRRI [International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] upland field during the 1986 dry season to determine the effects of potassium (K) on root growth and yield of upland rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Kinandang Patong) under drought and compacted soil conditions. Under compacted soil condition, root growth decreased with soil depth due to increased soil penetration resistance. Drought stress increased soil penetration resistance which increased root growth. Potassium application at 75 kg/ha increased the crop's root mass density (RMD) in well-watered and stressed treatments. Soil compaction decreased RMD when no K fertilizer was applied. With 75 kg K/ha application, soil compaction did not decrease grain yield even with low water supply. With high water supply and K application, soil compaction increased tiller and panicle number, and number of filled spikelets. Results suggest that K application can lessen the detrimental effects of drought and soil compaction on root growth and yield.
