The seasonal variation in spikelet number of IR58 and IR64, two early maturing cultivars, and the factors associated with it were studied through a monthly planting experiment conducted at IRRI [International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] field. The number of spikelets per unit area of a rice cultivar differed from one transplanting month to the other. Differing also according to the month of planting was the ratio of dark respiration to nitrogen content (R/N) when determined at panicle initiation period. In months R/N was high, spikelet numbers also tend to be high. A close association was observed between spikelet number and the product of R/N and solar radiation at reproductive stage. R/N value around panicle initiation stage could be a good criteria for screening high sink formation efficiency in rice cultivars.
