Production of high quality adsorbent charcoal from Philippine woods: 1. Powdered activated carbon

A study on the production of activated carbon from selected Philippine wood species including coir dust, was done adopting the fluidized bed method for both carbonization and activation. Carbonization of wood samples was carried out in a continuous inner heat type reactor at 420 degrees Celsius. Yields of charcoal from the woods studied ranged from 10% to 30%, except coir dust which was 35%. Activation studies were performed batchwise using an external heat type reactor to determine the characteristics of the reaction and of the activated carbon products under superheated steam atmosphere. Comparative activation tests were carried out in an inner heat type activating reactor using char products from selected potential raw material sources. The various factors which influence the adsorption properties of activated carbon products were determined and established for both reactors. The range of adsorptive values of the activated carbon products obtained at 30% yield and activated at temperature between 800 degrees Celsius to 900 degrees Celsius were as follows: internal surface area, 1000-1500 square meter/g; methylene blue value, 270-370 mg MB/g A.C.; iodine value, 1000-1200 mg I2/g A.C. These results compare favorably with commercial grade activated carbon.
