Effect of P fertilization on the growth and mineral nutrition of rice on acid upland soil

A field experiment was conducted on an acid upland at Mahipon, Cavinti, Laguna (Philippines) to identify rice varieties adaptable to acid upland conditions and to study the effects of P fertilizer on the growth, yield and mineral nutrition of rice on acid upland. The trials were laid out in split plot design with P treatment as main plot and varieties as subplots with 4 replications. The P levels were 0 and 40kg P/ha as solophos and varieties were 40 entries from the japonica, indica and aus rice groups. Fifty kg P/ha as ammonium sulfate and 25 kg K/ha were applied to all plots. Visual plant rating showed that phosphorus deficiency was the major growth limiting factor. Varieties found to be P-efficient were IRAT140, IRAT115, UPL Ri5 and Kinandang Patong. IRAT104, CNA4136, AUS196 and GS529 were the most P-responsive varieties. Mean grain yields increased by 56% with P addition. Plant rating correlated significantly with grain yield. Plant tissue analysis at 10 WAS showed that plants suffered from deficiencies of N, P, Si and Fe in the absence of P fertilizer. Addition of P resulted in an increase in Fe, Mn and Al and a decrease in N and Si concentrations. Phosphorus treatment significantly decreased P/Mn ratio in the plant but did not affect the P/Fe and P/Al ratios. P/Mn ratio correlated significantly with plant rating and grain yield. These results suggest that P fertilization improved the growth and yield of rice on acid upland due to the resulting interaction and a balance of the nutrients in the rice plant.
